Google AI Mode: What It Is, How It Works and What It Means for SEO

Google AI Mode is Google’s conversational AI experience inside Search. It is designed for complex questions, comparisons, research and follow-up queries. Instead of showing only a standard list of links, AI Mode can break a question into related subtopics, search across multiple sources and assemble a response with links back to the web.

For users, that means fewer separate searches for complicated tasks. For SEO and content teams, it changes the shape of the search journey. Visibility is no longer only about ranking one page for one exact query. Your content also needs to be useful across the related questions Google may explore before generating an answer.

This guide covers what Google AI Mode is, how it works, how to access it, how it differs from AI Overviews and Gemini, how to turn it off or avoid it, how Google chooses supporting sources, and what marketers should change for SEO in 2026.

What is Google AI Mode?

Google AI Mode is an AI-powered search experience within Google Search. Google describes it as a way to ask longer, more complex questions, explore a topic through follow-ups and receive a synthesized answer with links to supporting web pages.

Traditional Search often asks the user to translate one complicated problem into several smaller queries. AI Mode can do more of that exploration inside one conversation.

For example, instead of separately searching for CRM pricing, integrations, security requirements, implementation effort and customer reviews, a user can ask one detailed comparison question and then refine the answer through follow-ups.

Google’s current documentation also supports text, voice, images and files as inputs in AI Mode, including PDFs and Drive files on supported accounts and devices. Users can return to earlier AI Mode sessions through AI Mode history.

You can read Google’s current product instructions on the official AI Mode help page.

How does Google AI Mode work?

The two most important concepts behind Google AI Mode are retrieval-augmented generation and query fan-out.

Google says its generative AI Search features use core Search ranking and quality systems to retrieve relevant and current web pages from the Search index. The AI system then uses information from those retrieved pages to build a response and show supporting links.

This matters because AI Mode is not disconnected from traditional Search. A page still needs to be crawlable, indexable and eligible to appear in Google Search before it can become a supporting source in AI Mode.

What is query fan-out?

Query fan-out is the process of taking one complex question and generating several related searches around its subtopics. Google can run those searches concurrently, retrieve useful information for each one and combine the results into a broader answer.

Imagine a user asks:

What is the best project management software for a 50-person remote agency that needs client access, time tracking and Slack integration?

AI Mode may need information about project management tools for agencies, remote-team features, guest access, time tracking, Slack integrations, pricing and reviews before it can answer well.

This is one reason topic depth matters. A page that answers only the headline query may be less useful than a page or content cluster that also answers the natural follow-up questions around it. Our Answer Engine Optimization guide covers this broader shift from ranking for keywords to making useful answers easier for search systems to retrieve and cite.

How to access Google AI Mode

Google currently provides several ways to enter AI Mode:

  • Go directly to google.com/ai.
  • Run a Google Search and select AI Mode when the option is available.
  • Open the Google app and use the AI Mode entry point on supported devices.

Availability and individual features can still vary by country, language, account, age and rollout stage.

What can you do with Google AI Mode?

AI Mode is most useful when a question benefits from exploration rather than a single short answer. Current capabilities include:

  • Ask longer, multi-part questions.
  • Ask follow-up questions without restarting the research process.
  • Use text, voice, images and files as inputs where supported.
  • Ask questions about a webpage or URL.
  • Compare products, services or options across several criteria.
  • Continue previous research through AI Mode history.
  • Receive answers grounded in information from multiple web sources.

Google has also been expanding personalization and connected-app functionality. With permission, selected experiences can use previous Search activity and connected Google content apps to tailor responses. Some connected-app capabilities are limited by market and language. Google is also testing personalized ads in AI Mode using connected-app context for eligible users, a separate development that raises questions about advertising relevance and privacy.

The interface is also becoming more prominent. Google has tested task-focused shortcuts on the Search homepage that route users directly into AI Mode. We covered that development in our Google AI Mode buttons analysis.

Is Google AI Mode free?

Core AI Mode access is available through Google Search in supported regions without requiring a separate paid Search subscription. Some advanced or experimental capabilities can have separate eligibility rules, account requirements or limited rollouts.

If one feature is missing from your account, that does not necessarily mean AI Mode itself is unavailable.

Google AI Mode vs regular Google Search

Both experiences still rely on Google Search infrastructure. The difference is how the information is retrieved, assembled and presented to the user.

Google AI Mode vs AI Overviews

AI Mode and AI Overviews are related, but they are not the same experience.

Google has been bringing these surfaces closer together, so the distinction is increasingly about the depth of the experience rather than two completely separate systems.

If you are comparing the wider disciplines around these surfaces, see our AEO vs SEO guide and our guide to Generative Engine Optimisation.

Google AI Mode vs Gemini

Google AI Mode and Gemini share Google AI technology, but they serve different product roles.

AI Mode is part of Google Search. It is closely connected to Search systems, the web index and supporting web links. Gemini is Google’s broader AI assistant. It is designed for a wider range of assistant tasks such as writing, reasoning, coding and working with connected apps.

There is overlap between the two products, and Google continues to bring Gemini model capabilities into Search. But from a user-intent perspective, AI Mode is still a search experience first.

Where does Google AI Mode get its information?

Google says its generative AI Search features use retrieval from the Google Search index to ground responses in relevant, up-to-date web information. AI Mode can then show links that support the generated answer or help users explore the topic further.

This is important for publishers and brands because AI Mode does not remove the web from Search. It changes how the web is used during the answer-generation process and where links appear inside the experience.

There is no guaranteed citation formula. A page can be technically eligible and still not appear. Google says the same core ranking and quality systems that power Search remain foundational for generative AI features.

Is Google AI Mode accurate?

Not always. Like other generative AI systems, AI Mode can misunderstand sources, miss context or generate incorrect information. Google tells users to check important responses and use supporting links where accuracy matters.

For marketers, this creates another reason to keep product facts, pricing, integrations, positioning and company information consistent across your website and important third-party profiles.

Does Google AI Mode remember previous searches?

AI Mode supports conversational follow-ups and AI Mode history. Google also offers Personal Intelligence features for eligible users that can reference previous Search activity and, when a user opts in, information from connected Google content apps.

These features depend on account settings, age, market and availability. Users can manage personalization and Search activity through their Google Account.

Can you turn off Google AI Mode?

There is no single universal switch that permanently removes every AI-powered feature from Google Search for every user. AI Mode is a Search experience that users can choose to enter, while AI Overviews and other AI features may appear inside standard Search depending on the query and account.

If you do not want to use AI Mode, the simplest option is to stay in the standard Search results rather than selecting the AI Mode tab. Personalization, Search history and connected-app settings can also be managed separately.

How to remove AI Mode from Google

If by “remove” you mean stop using the AI Mode interface, switch back to the standard Search results and avoid opening AI Mode. Google does not currently provide one global setting that permanently removes all generative AI functionality from Search.

How to disable AI Mode on Google

AI Mode itself can be left unused by staying in regular Search. If your concern is personalization rather than AI Mode as a surface, review your Search personalization, activity and connected-app settings in your Google Account.

How does Google AI Mode affect SEO?

The most important change is not that ranking suddenly stops mattering. It is that one visible question can trigger a broader retrieval process behind the scenes.

Google’s current Search Central guidance says SEO remains relevant because AI Overviews and AI Mode are rooted in the same core Search ranking and quality systems. There are no special technical requirements or secret schema types required specifically for AI Mode.

AI Mode can still change the search journey in several ways:

  • One prompt can generate several related searches through query fan-out.
  • Google can synthesize information from multiple websites before a click happens.
  • Users may arrive on a website later in the research process.
  • Clear, original and specific information becomes more valuable than generic summaries.
  • Internal topic coverage matters because related sub-questions can influence retrieval.

This is why traditional SEO, answer engine optimization and broader AI search visibility should be treated as connected layers rather than isolated strategies.

Google also published dedicated guidance for generative AI Search in 2026. We summarized the practical implications in our Market Insight on how to optimize content for AI search engines.

How to optimize for Google AI Mode

There is no separate “AI Mode ranking hack.” Google’s own guidance focuses on the same fundamentals that support strong Search performance, with extra emphasis on unique value, clear technical structure and useful information.

1. Cover the full question space

Do not create hundreds of thin pages for every possible fan-out query. Google explicitly warns against producing scaled pages primarily to manipulate rankings or generative AI responses.

Instead, build useful pages and clusters that naturally cover the questions a real user would ask around the topic. For a software category, that may include pricing, alternatives, integrations, use cases, implementation, security, limitations and ROI.

Our AI Search SEO guide covers how to structure those supporting topics without turning the site into a collection of repetitive pages.

2. Publish original, non-commodity information

Google’s 2026 generative AI optimization guide specifically emphasizes content that offers something beyond information that can be easily summarized from everywhere else.

Useful examples include original research, practitioner experience, testing, screenshots, customer evidence, proprietary data, expert commentary and clear first-hand observations.

This also improves normal search performance. Our SEO content optimization guide explains how to strengthen existing pages without simply adding more words.

3. Make important information easy to understand

Use descriptive headings, concise definitions, useful tables, lists and normal paragraphs. Important product information should not be buried inside vague marketing copy.

Google also says there is no requirement to break content into tiny “AI-friendly chunks.” Write for people first. Clear structure helps both users and search systems without turning the page into disconnected fragments.

4. Keep technical SEO strong

To be eligible as a supporting link in AI Mode, a page needs to be indexed and eligible to appear in Google Search with a snippet. Crawlability, internal linking, mobile usability, page experience, canonicalization and clean rendering still matter.

Google also recommends keeping important content available in textual form instead of placing key information only inside images or inaccessible interfaces.

5. Use structured data correctly, but do not expect it to unlock AI Mode

Structured data can help Google understand information on a page and can support eligible Search features. But Google says there is no special schema.org markup required for AI Mode or AI Overviews.

The important rule is that structured data should accurately match the visible content. Our Structured Data for SEO and AEO guide explains what schema can and cannot do.

6. Strengthen internal linking

Internal links help Google understand how your pages relate to one another and help users continue their research. For an AI search cluster, connect broad guides to specific implementation, comparison, measurement and commercial pages where those links are genuinely useful.

7. Keep your brand facts consistent

If your website says one thing about pricing, integrations or positioning while important third-party pages say something different, users and AI systems have to resolve that conflict. Keep high-value facts current across your own site and authoritative external profiles.

8. Build for the click after the answer

If AI Mode completes more of the early research before the user clicks, visitors may arrive with more context. Product pages, service pages and comparison pages should make proof, pricing context, differentiators and next steps easy to find.

Does traditional SEO still matter for Google AI Mode?

Yes. Google is explicit about this. Its generative AI features use core Search ranking and quality systems, and the company says foundational SEO best practices remain relevant.

That means you still need:

  • Helpful, reliable and original content.
  • Crawlable and indexable pages.
  • Clear internal links.
  • Good page experience.
  • Accurate structured data where it is appropriate.
  • Useful images and video where they improve the page.
  • Strong technical SEO.

If you are deciding where AEO or GEO fits into your existing program, our AEO vs SEO and GEO vs SEO comparisons show where the terminology changes and where the underlying work is still the same.

Does Google AI Mode reduce organic traffic?

AI Mode can reduce the need for some clicks because users can complete more research inside Search. But the effect will not be identical for every query, page or industry.

Some informational questions can be resolved inside the AI response. Other users may click through after comparing more options and arrive with stronger intent. Google continues to show supporting links inside its generative Search experiences, and its five updates to Google AI Mode links make some of those sources more prominent. That increases the opportunity to be discovered, but does not guarantee more visits.

For B2B teams, it is increasingly important to measure outcomes beyond sessions. Track qualified leads, demo requests, signups, assisted conversions, branded demand and pipeline alongside organic traffic.

How to track Google AI Mode visibility in Search Console

This has changed significantly in 2026. Google Search Console now includes a dedicated Generative AI performance report for Search.

Google says the report includes impressions from both AI Overviews and AI Mode. It can show performance by page, country, date and device. Standard Search Console reporting also counts AI Mode clicks, impressions and position using Google’s normal Search measurement methodology.

This means AI Mode is no longer something teams need to monitor only through manual prompt sampling.

A practical measurement setup now combines:

  • Search Console’s Generative AI performance report.
  • Page-level generative AI impressions.
  • Country and device trends.
  • Normal Search clicks and conversions.
  • Manual prompt checks for brand description and competitor presence.
  • CRM and pipeline data for commercial impact.

Third-party AI visibility tools can still be useful for structured prompt monitoring, but they should complement official Search Console data rather than replace it. Our Gemini visibility tracker guide shows how to monitor brand mentions, citations, competitors and cited sources in a repeatable way.

What Google AI Mode changes for B2B SaaS

For B2B SaaS, the biggest risk is not simply losing an informational click. AI Mode can move more of the vendor evaluation process into Search before a buyer reaches a website.

A buyer may ask Google to compare several tools by price, integrations, team size, implementation effort, security requirements and customer fit. If that information is unclear or missing from your site, the buyer may form a shortlist without you.

SaaS teams should make sure important pages clearly explain:

  • Who the product is for.
  • What problems it solves.
  • Key use cases and limitations.
  • Pricing context where possible.
  • Integrations and technical requirements.
  • Security and compliance information.
  • Implementation expectations.
  • Customer proof and measurable outcomes.
  • How the product compares with common alternatives.

This connects directly to the broader agentic web, where AI systems can increasingly research, compare and sometimes take actions rather than only summarize information.

We also covered Google’s move toward more task-oriented Search in our Google agentic search analysis.

A practical 90-day Google AI Mode SEO plan

You do not need a separate AI Mode content team. Start by improving the pages that already matter commercially.

PeriodWhat to do
Weeks 1 to 3Review Search Console’s generative AI report, identify pages already receiving impressions, and manually check how Google describes your brand for 20 to 30 important buyer questions.
Weeks 4 to 6Fix factual gaps around pricing, integrations, positioning, implementation and product limitations. Improve the existing pages before creating new ones.
Weeks 7 to 10Expand topic coverage around the most important unanswered buyer questions and strengthen internal links between related pages.
Weeks 11 to 13Review generative AI impressions again, repeat the prompt set and compare brand mentions, source visibility, description accuracy, conversions and pipeline.

For most sites, the first win will come from improving existing content rather than producing a large number of new AI-specific pages.

What not to do for Google AI Mode SEO

  • Do not create hundreds of fan-out pages. Google explicitly warns against scaled content created mainly to manipulate rankings or AI responses.
  • Do not rewrite everything into tiny answer fragments. Google says special “chunking” is not required.
  • Do not expect llms.txt to improve Google visibility. Google says it ignores llms.txt for Search ranking and visibility.
  • Do not chase fake mentions. Inauthentic mentions and spam do not become useful just because AI search exists.
  • Do not expect schema to be a shortcut. There is no special AI Mode schema.
  • Do not separate AI SEO from basic technical SEO. If Google cannot crawl and index the page properly, AI Mode cannot reliably use it as a supporting Search result.

Common questions about Google AI Mode

What is Google AI Mode?

Google AI Mode is a conversational AI experience inside Google Search. It can explore a complex question across related subtopics, generate a synthesized response, show supporting web links and continue through follow-up questions.

How do I turn off AI Mode on Google?

If you do not want to use AI Mode, stay in the standard Search results rather than selecting the AI Mode tab. Google does not currently provide one universal switch that disables every generative AI feature in Search for every user.

How do I remove AI Mode from Google?

You cannot permanently remove all Google Search AI features with one global setting. You can avoid the dedicated AI Mode experience by using regular Search and manage personalization, Search history and connected-app settings separately.

How do I disable AI Mode on Google?

There is no universal “disable AI Mode” control. Use standard Search instead of AI Mode. If you are trying to limit personalized AI responses, adjust the relevant Search activity, personalization or connected-app settings in your Google Account.

The bottom line

Google AI Mode is not a replacement for Search. It is an expansion of what Search can do. Instead of asking users to break a complicated problem into several short searches, Google can investigate related subtopics and continue the research conversationally.

For SEO teams, the response should not be to abandon traditional optimization or chase a separate set of AI hacks. Google’s own guidance points in the opposite direction: strong technical SEO, original and useful content, accurate information, clear site structure and helpful user experiences remain the foundation.

The opportunity is to make those foundations work across a broader question space. If your site explains the topic clearly, provides information worth retrieving and gives users a useful next step after the answer, it is better positioned for both traditional Search and Google AI Mode.
